Recognizing and Treating Burnout
Burnout, which is a type of stress related to work, is characterized by consistently feeling worn out, whether it be emotionally, physically, mentally, or some combination of the three. This ‘work’ can also depend on each person. A person may feel burnout from the work associated with their career, their family dynamics, their academics, or anything else. However, despite how widespread burnout is, not everyone knows how to address it. In fact, many struggle even recognizing that they are burnt out. Here, we talk about how to recognize burnout, as well as how to treat it. But first, an important distinction: burnout is not a medical diagnosis. Rather, burnout is a consistent feeling associated with certain aspects of one's life. It can, however, raise the risk of developing certain disorders, such as depression.
Causes of Burnout:
There are many potential causes of burnout, and a variety of different things may contribute to each person's feelings. A few common causes of burnout include:
A lack of control over one’s work
A heavy workload
Long hours
Too much (or too little) to do
A lack of support
Issues concerning work-life balance
Working in a “helping profession”
A helping profession is a job that includes giving to others, such as healthcare jobs
Recognizing burnout:
Burnout can look many different ways. Someone with burnout may question the value of their work or lack the motivation to do it at all. Feeling like every day is a bad day, like there is little reason to care about your work, and being exhausted all the time are commonly experienced in those with burnout. Someone may find it difficult to get started on their work each day, to stay focused, and to feel engaged with the work they are doing or the people they are doing it with. They may feel like they are an inadequate employee, and they may get little satisfaction from the work they are doing. In some cases, burnout can result in changes in sleeping habits, headaches, and other physical manifestations. Some may engage in unhealthy behaviors, such as using drugs or alcohol, to decrease the negative emotions associated with burnout.
Effects of Burnout:
It is easy to think that the effect of burnout is heightened stress. This is, of course, true for many, but there are many potential ramifications other than simply feeling more stressed. Some of these include:
Feeling drained
Experiencing and inability to cope, both in and outside of work
Sleep disturbances
Irritability
Substance abuse
Heart disease
Hypertension
Getting sick more often
How to handle burnout:
There are a variety of ways to approach burnout. One idea may be to speak with your boss or supervisor about your concerns if applicable. Together, you may be able to discuss what might change about your routine, set reasonable goals, and strive for sustainable results. If an agreement cannot be reached, it may be worth exploring other job options, such as a different position within your organization or a new position elsewhere. Seeking support is important as well, and talking with loved ones may help you protect yourself from burnout. Additionally, forms of self care, such as relaxing, exercising, or engaging in hobbies can be impactful in treating and preventing burnout. Finding a healthy work-life balance may help you spend more time engaging in activities you enjoy, such as spending time with your family, practicing art forms, or just enjoying some down time. Finding meaning in things other than your work can have a great impact on burnout. Setting clear boundaries can also help, even if these boundaries are just for yourself. For example, you may set a boundary that states that you will not respond to emails outside of business hours. And of course, prioritizing getting enough sleep each night is paramount in remaining energized. If it seems like a good option for you, speaking with a professional, such as a therapist or counselor, may help you unpack the causes of burnout, as well as your options in treating and preventing it.
